Hi, I’m Angela
I’m a neonatal nurse practitioner who specializes in helping parents overcome their feelings of insecurity and unpreparedness when becoming parents and caring for their newborn.
As a neonatal nurse practitioner for the last 8 years with 5 years of NICU nursing experience prior to this; I have seen countless parents go through an array of emotions trying to adjust to becoming parents. While everyones experiences and perceptions are different, there is one common thing that all parents benefit from and that is professional guidance and support from those with experience and expert knowledge.
My Journey Into Becoming A Newborn Coach Started Back In 2018...
Just after the first of the year in 2018 is when I had my first child. I thought I felt prepared (minus the giving birth part - I had no clue what to expect here and it caused A LOT of angst), how could I not be prepared? I took are of sick infants for a living, a well-baby should be a piece of cake! You put them on a feeding schedule, sleeping schedule, give a bath every 3 days, and sleep when the baby sleeps - right?! Uhhh, wrong!
I was more sore than I EVER expected to be after giving birth. Breastfeeding was hard and flat-out painful. I was exhausted, and I mean EXHAUSTED - everyone tells you you're going to be tired but until you go through it, you don't realize how tiring it is. Feeding schedule? NOPE! Sleep schedule? NOPE! Everything I thought I knew and how to handle was just in my dreams! On top of all this, I had horrendous post-partum anxiety that came out of nowhere!
Those first 6-8 weeks were rough for me. Hormonal adjustments, lack of sleep, a new body - it was a lot. I had no idea what I could do to help myself, so I essentially just "suffered" in silence...
But Then, Something Amazing Happened….
I slowly came out of my funk over those first several months. I found some activities and groups that suited me where I was at the time, and most importantly - what I needed at the time.
It took me a year or so later, reflecting on what I went through with my first and doing whatever possibly NOT to go through that again with my second (at this point I was pregnant with her).
How could I change my experience with my daughter, and how could I ensure that I was able to be an emotionally-present parent for my son??
I needed to have realistic expectations. Use the resources that I had - parents, friends, etc. Having a helping hand from my "resources" helped immensely to set my expanding family off on the right foot!
From This Moment On, I Knew I Could Change Other Parents Experiences
With my second I was able to enjoy maternity leave, I didn't struggle with post-partum anxiety and my life as a whole was immensely more balanced! Everything was a positive experience.
I smiled, I laughed, and I appreciated the newborn phase instead of wishing for it to hurry-up and end like I did with my first.
My stress level was down and I felt more prepared; therefore my relationship with my husband flourished and I relished the time I got to spend with both of my babies.
